starting the day
“I like to relax, find a nice restaurant to have breakfast and enjoy the newspaper. My workday starts around 11am—a time that allows me to maximize the amount of people I’ll catch at home.”
what your week is like
“I’ll usually get three clusters (in three different zip codes), and my first job is to go through and see if there are any houses that were unaccounted for. I park the car and physically walk the neighborhood, adding any missed houses to my daily Report. I also try to get familiar with the area I’m in on each assignment—where the dry cleaners, restaurants and FedEx locations are.”
first tasks/job duties
“I try to find as many people as I can who are at home during daytime hours and talk to them...might be retired people, people with a day off, or people who work from home. This is the most challenging part of the job—finding the proper respondent at home.”
lunchtime
“My breakfast and lunch are really combined. The only thing I do that would qualify as a traditional lunchtime break is taking a few moments to regroup and focus on the calls I have yet to make.”
afternoon activity
“This is when things start getting geared up for me. The majority of my interviews are between 3pm and 7pm. I’m not always done by 7 though...if I see that people are pulling in their driveways, I’ll keep at it ‘til much later.”
personality characteristics that aid your success
“My genuine and sincere interest in people. I find them fascinating—each one is like a snowflake. I’ve also found over the years that rejection doesn’t affect me, that I don’t take it personally. I also have the tenacity of a bulldog. I find the job very challenging at times and that motivates me.”
what you’re thinking as you end the day
“I go over my job performance. It’s pretty much an independent job, so I review myself and the strategy I used.”
greatest thing about being a Field Interviewer
“Freedom, freedom, freedom.”
background/experience
“For 30 years, I sold something or another door to door.”
favorite part of the day
“Evening, when I get to wind down. It depends on the area, but I’m a big baseball fan so I get to catch some games in various towns. I’ve been lucky enough to see some major league games this year.”
